The Doctor of Philosophy (Engineering) at UOW Malaysia KDU is a research-based program for students who want to become experts in their field. It trains candidates to integrate research practices and procedures with professional responsibilities, and to develop advanced scholarly skills through research methodology, research seminars, workshops, and independent research work. Research areas include Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems, Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, Wireless and Mobile Communication Systems, Photonics and Optical Engineering, Manufacturing Systems and Industrial Engineering, Human-centred design and Ergonomics engineering, and Robotics, Kinematics and Motion Control.
The program includes a semester of Research Methodology, periodic research seminars and workshops, and a proposal defence to build a comprehensive research proposal. Students then work independently on their research projects under the guidance of supervisors. The program culminates in a thesis (typically not more than 80,000 words), followed by a VIVA VOCE oral presentation. Students also disseminate findings through publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. Duration is 3–6 years full-time or 4–8 years part-time, with study at the Glenmarie campus.
