Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Science

The Bachelor of Secondary Education, major in Science is a four-year program that prepares students for teaching through pedagogy and subject-area expertise. Students build know-how in education foundations, principles of teaching, facilitating learning, curriculum development, child and adolescent psychology, assessment of student learning, educational technology, instructional materials preparation, and classroom management. The program supports disciplinal expertise in the Science specialization.

The program culminates in an intensive one-year practice teaching in the laboratory school of the College and in cooperating public and private schools. Student teachers receive active mentoring from experienced professional teachers during classroom teaching under supervision of a supervising teacher and/or cooperating teacher. The curriculum includes education courses such as foundations and learner-centered teaching, assessment and learning technology, and Science-focused courses such as environmental science, inorganic chemistry, cell and molecular biology, and laboratory components.
