Bachelor of Education Honours in Primary Education Degree Programme

The Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Primary Education is a degree programme conducted by the Faculty of Education at the Open University of Sri Lanka. It is designed to enhance knowledge and skills in Early Childhood and Primary Education and to support teaching and caregiving at primary levels. The programme focuses on accepted theories and practices in Early Childhood Education and Primary Education and includes practical work to develop teaching skills.

Students study for four years with 120 credits. The programme is offered in Sinhala, English, and Tamil. It also supports participants with strengthening academic disciplines, improving classroom organization and management capabilities, and strengthening interaction with parents and communities. Students who complete Level 3 and 4 can obtain a Certificate of Higher Diploma in Early Childhood and Primary Education by exiting the programme.

Admission to Level 3 (1st year)

• Applicants should be 18 years or over on the closing date of applications.
• At least three (3) passes at the General Certificate in Education (Advanced Level) examination and six passes at the General Certificate in Education (Ordinary Level) examination including First Language and Mathematics
• Or Successfully completed the Advanced Certificate in Pre-school Education Programme conducted by the Open University of Sri Lanka.
• Or At least pass grade in minimum of thirty (30) courses credits or granted exemptions at SLQF Level 2 of any Foundation Programme conducted by the Open University of Sri Lanka and six passes at the General Certificate in Education (Ordinary Level ) examination including First Language and mathematics.
• Or National Diploma in Teaching (Primary Education) offered by the National College of Education.
• Or An equivalent or higher qualification acceptable to the senate.

All candidates should sit for a selection test conducted by the university.

Admission to Level 5 (3rd year)

• Diploma in Early Childhood and Primary Education conducted by the Open University of Sri Lanka.
• Or Higher Diploma in Early Childhood and Primary Education conducted by the Open university of Sri Lanka.
• Or National Diploma in Teaching (Primary Education) offered by the National Colleges of Education.
