The Diploma in Food Science at the Open University of Sri Lanka is a one-academic-year diploma that covers basic principles of Food Science and how they are used in the food industry. It includes eight compulsory courses across food science foundations, food constituents, food microbiology and spoilage, basic mathematics and statistics for food science, laboratory sessions, food preservation and processing, quality assurance in food industry, and novel applications in food industry.
Teaching is organised across Semester 1 and Semester 2. Practical hours are included through the laboratory course CYD3516 and a case study in CYD3317, accounting for about 400 hours (≈25%). The programme carries Level 3 academic standard under the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF) and includes a total credit content of thirty (30) for 1500 Notional Learning Hours.
