Graduate Diploma in Bilingual Education

The Graduate Diploma in Bilingual Education at the Open University of Sri Lanka is a postgraduate programme delivered by the Postgraduate Institute of English. Students study philosophical and sociological bases of education, theories and issues in bilingual education, language arts, methodology, material design and classroom management in bilingual education, educational psychology, and assessment and evaluation.

The programme includes Teaching Practicum and a continuing teacher professional development module with mentoring and supervision in a project/portfolio. It is designed for bilingual education teachers in government schools, pirivenas, semi-government and private schools, and also for teacher educators, in-service advisors, principals, educational administrators, lecturers in higher education institutes, and general applicants.

A person seeking admission to the program leading to the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Bilingual Education should have

• A Bachelor’s degree at SLQF Level 5 or above from a recognized university OR
• A professional qualification equivalent to NVQ Level 07 obtained from an institute recognized by the University Grants Commission or the Ministry of Higher Education OR
• An equivalent or higher qualification acceptable to the Senate of the Open University of Sri Lanka
• AND a minimum of one-year experience related to Bilingual Education (teaching content subjects in English – Hard CLIL)
• AND Pass the selection procedures
