Master of Philosophy in Education and Doctor of Philosophy in Education

The Open University of Sri Lanka offers a Master of Philosophy in Education and a Doctor of Philosophy in Education through the Faculty of Education, conducted by the Department of Secondary and Tertiary. The programmes include admission requirements that involve completion of a short course in Research methodology in Education conducted by the Faculty of Education, unless an exception applies. Candidates also submit a comprehensive research proposal according to the format given in the faculty website.

Admission for the Master of Philosophy in Education requires a master’s degree in the field of education at SLQF 9 or above, preferably with a significant research component. The Doctor of Philosophy in Education requires a master of Philosophy degree in the field of Education. The programmes use the medium of English, Sinhala and Tamil, and the selection process includes application submission with identity and academic documents plus completion certificates for the required short course.

General Admission Requirements

• Doctor of Philosophy in Education: A master of Philosophy degree in the field of Education
• Master of Philosophy in Education: A master’s degree in the field of education at SLQF 9 or above preferably in the field of education with a significant research component.

Specific Admission Requirements of the Faculty of Education

• All candidates should successfully complete the short course in Research methodology in Education conducted by the Faculty of Education (Except those who possess two years Master with a research component of 18 course credits prior to registration of the programme)

Selection Procedure

• Candidates should submit a duly filled application from along with copies of birth certificate, National Identity Card and highest academic qualifications
• Copy of certificate of successful completion of a short course in Research methodology of education
• Submit a comprehensive research proposal according to the format given in the faculty website.
