University of Geneva Excellence Master Fellowships

Excellence Master Fellowships is an Excellence Fellowship program established by the Faculty of Science of the University of Geneva with the support of external partners, and it is open to outstanding and highly motivated students pursuing a Master of Science degree in disciplines covered by the Faculty of Science. The stated purpose is candidate selection based on excellence.

The program is for students who wish to pursue a Master of Science in one of the disciplines covered by the Faculty of Science (astronomy, biology, chemistry and biochemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, pharmaceutical sciences, and earth sciences). Masters degrees are described as either entirely in English or in English and French. Eligibility also depends on meeting the admission criteria of the chosen Master and being selected based on the application file.

Selection is stated to be based on excellence. The award is granted after submission of an application file and following the enrollment procedure described on the Admissions office website. Students must be selected, and the Fellowship decision depends on the application file content.

The Excellence Fellowship consists of a grant amounting to CHF 10'000 to CHF 15’000 per year and is awarded for one year. It can be extended for the regular duration of the chosen Master’s program (three or four semesters), provided the applicant is academically successful at the end of the first semester. The Fellowship is described as having no teaching duties. No additional obligations after the program are stated.

• Must wish to pursue a Master of Science degree in a discipline covered by the University of Geneva Faculty of Science.
• Must meet the admission criteria of the Master of choice.
• Selection is based on excellence.
• Must complete the enrollment procedure described on the Admissions office website for the application to be considered.
• Regardless of home university, may apply if the applicant has passed or is doing a bachelor degree and is one of the best in their year.
• If the applicant is a student at the University of Geneva: must include a scan of the UNIGE card.
• If the applicant is not yet a student at the University of Geneva: must include the mail entitled “UNIGE-Candidature: Dépôt de votre dossier” received after registering for the master’s program, as proof of beginning the registration process.
• The application must be submitted in English or French.
• Students who have already started a Master programme at the Faculty of Science can no longer apply for the Excellence Master Fellowship.
• If all the required clauses are not completed, the application file would not be considered.

• Grant amount: CHF 10'000 to CHF 15’000 per year.
• No teaching duties.
• Award duration: awarded for one year, extended for the regular duration of the chosen Master’s program (three or four semesters) if academically successful at the end of the first semester.

1. Register for the Master’s program and complete the enrollment procedure described on the Admissions office website; the application is only considered if the enrollment procedure is fulfilled.
2. Prepare the application documents and submit the application online in a single PDF file, in English or French.
3. The application is made online from the beginning of January of each year; after registering, an e-mail is sent with a personal link to fill out the application form.

• Scan of national identity card or passport.
• Curriculum Vitae (2 pages maximum).
• Transcript of exams passed during bachelor education, with all grades.
• Motivation letter describing specific scientific interests and motivation to pursue a Master of Science program at the University of Geneva.
• Letters of references from two professors attesting aptitude to this program.
• Any other pertinent information such as results of GRE (General requirement examination), of TOEFL or other language test.
• If the applicant is a student at the University of Geneva: scan of the UNIGE card.
• If the applicant is not yet a student at the University of Geneva: the e-mail titled “UNIGE-Candidature: Dépôt de votre dossier” received after registering for the master’s program (proof the registration process has begun).
