Bachelors in Psychology Programs in the USA: Top 20

Psychology is one of the most crowded undergraduate subjects in the United States, and with 814 bachelor's programmes on record the labels stop helping. Every one of the twenty below runs four years with Fall and Spring entry, so length is not what separates them. The real difference is shape: a science-heavy BSc with set maths and laboratory work, a broader BA, a fully online route, or a named specialism such as developmental psychology.

How this list is ordered: Ordered by each university's QS World University Rankings position where it has one, then by research citations recorded by OpenAlex; one programme per university, and universities with neither measure are left out.

University of Chicago

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration4 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • QS World 2026#13
  • Research citations39,573,581

Chicago teaches psychology as four connected areas: how people think, how they behave around others, how they change with age, and what happens when the mind struggles. You meet all four before choosing where to go deeper.

Lectures sit alongside laboratory sessions and your own research work. You learn to read a study properly, spot weak evidence and run a small experiment yourself. The staff teaching you are active researchers, so the reading keeps moving with new work.

  • QS World 2026#40
  • Research citations67,096,936

UCLA treats psychology as a science first. Core classes cover thinking, child development and social behaviour, and each one leans on method: how a study is built, what the numbers mean, and where a claim stops being safe.

After the core, electives let you follow one strand. Internships and research places add the practical side, so you finish able to run an investigation rather than only describe one.

Carnegie Mellon University

  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration4 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • QS World 2026#65
  • Research citations17,727,847

Carnegie Mellon puts you inside the research cycle early. You watch behaviour, write a hypothesis, build the experiment, run the statistics and report what you found. Biology and social science both feed in, so the brain and the group get equal weight.

You can take it as a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Science or a minor. Child development is studied at the university's own children's school, and clinical internships are open to students heading that way.

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration4 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • QS World 2026#70
  • Research citations33,306,613

Illinois builds the degree from core classes in thinking, development and social behaviour, then opens electives so you can specialise. Most students finish with a capstone project or a research thesis of their own.

Entry wants a strong school record, and psychology, biology or mathematics at school will help. You also send a personal statement and reference letters. The language bar is IELTS 6.5, with nothing below 6.0 in any band.

Entry requirements, as the university states them

  • Completion of secondary education with a strong academic record
  • Courses in psychology, biology, and mathematics may be advantageous
  • Personal statement or statement of purpose
  • Letters of recommendation
  • IELTS: Minimum score of 6.5 with no band score below 6.0

University of Washington

  • Research citations98,886,732

The Seattle campus covers development, social behaviour and clinical psychology, so you see the mind from early childhood through to treatment. Research method and ethics run through every year instead of sitting in one module.

Teaching mixes lectures with laboratory sessions and field experience. Undergraduates can join research projects, and that is usually where students find the topic they carry into a master's.

  • QS World 2026#110
  • Research citations44,392,721

Wisconsin-Madison starts with the four core blocks — development, thinking, social behaviour and abnormal psychology — then builds the timetable around method.

Research design, statistics and behavioural science carry that methodological half, with internships and joint projects beside the class work.

Graduates move into human resources and into organisational psychology consulting, both of which lean on the statistics more than new students expect.

7 Bachelor Psychology

University of Minnesota - Morris

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration4 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • QS World 2025#203
  • Research citations44,929,596

Morris keeps psychology small and close. You cover thinking, development, social behaviour and abnormal psychology, then narrow to one area for deeper study with staff who already know your work.

Research is part of the course rather than an extra. Students run joint projects and their own studies. The degree points towards industrial and organisational psychology, human resources and behavioural health support roles.

8 Bachelor Developmental Psychology

University of Minnesota-Twin Cities

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration4 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • QS World 2025#203
  • Research citations44,929,596

This is narrower than a general psychology degree. Developmental psychology follows one person from infancy to old age and asks how thinking, feeling and social life change at each stage.

You take the usual psychology foundations first, then specialist classes in child development, adolescence and ageing. Statistics and research methods are heavy here, because the evidence in this field comes from following groups over many years. Internships and volunteer placements add contact with real children and families.

  • Duration4 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • QS World 2025#215
  • Research citations31,441,503

Florida's psychology Bachelor of Arts is delivered entirely online, designed for students whose commitments rule out campus attendance. The science stays in: biological bases of behaviour, learning and thinking, change across the lifespan, and cultural influence.

Alongside psychology you take statistics, mathematics and biology. Four core areas are compulsory, with psychology electives on top. The entry list names general psychology, a biology course, pre-calculus and an introductory statistics course.

Entry requirements, as the university states them

  • Required: Biological Sciences (BSC 2005/2009) OR Biology 1 (BSC 2010)
  • Required: General Psychology (PSY 2012)
  • Required: Pre-calculus: Algebra and Trigonometry (MAC 1147) OR Pre-calculus Algebra (MAC 1140) and Trigonometry (MAC 1114)

10 Bachelor Psychology

University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration4 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • QS World 2026#281
  • Research citations34,908,078

Johnstown is a smaller Pittsburgh campus, and its psychology degree stays close to the fundamentals: core topics first, then theory, then research method, taught in that order.

Field work and internships are built into the later years. Students leaving this course commonly move into human resources, social services coordination and rehabilitation support — roles that want the practical hours as much as the theory.

  • StartsFall, Spring
  • QS World 2026#294
  • Research citations17,257,367

Case Western leans on its laboratories. You cover development, abnormal, social and cognitive psychology, but the part that stands out is time spent designing experiments and working through your own data.

The department works across subject boundaries with other parts of the university. That suits a student who wants psychology sitting next to medicine, engineering or management rather than standing on its own.

12 Bachelor Psychology

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration4 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • QS World 2026#294
  • Research citations8,515,180

Notre Dame pairs the standard core — thinking, social behaviour, development and abnormal psychology — with a solid run of statistics, research methods and experimental classes.

Outside the classroom the emphasis falls on service. Internships, volunteer work and community projects are the normal route here, and the university's commitment to social justice shapes the kind of placements students take on.

Tufts University

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration4 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • QS World 2026#334
  • Research citations13,111,207

Tufts covers the four main areas of psychology and then makes room for independent research. Core courses come first, electives follow, and a project of your own is the usual way to finish.

Laboratory work and field studies carry the practical half. Much of it is done in groups, so you leave with the collaboration, writing and presenting habits that research jobs and graduate programmes look for.

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration4 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • QS World 2025#442
  • Research citations10,163,291

Colorado State runs psychology as a Bachelor of Science, so mathematics, biology, statistics and further natural sciences sit beside the psychology itself. Writing and laboratory research are part of the load.

You pick a concentration instead of a general path: addictions counselling, clinical and counselling psychology, general psychology, industrial and organisational psychology, or mind, brain and behaviour. Some tracks carry field placement credits. The major is available on campus and online.

  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration4 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • QS World 2026#452
  • Research citations14,298,244

Stony Brook's degree is broad on purpose. Thinking, development, social behaviour and abnormal psychology are all covered, with research methods running underneath every one of them.

Teaching splits between lectures, hands-on laboratory work and group projects, so the course trains teamwork as much as analysis. Internships and research placements supply the experience, and graduates often move into social services coordination or human resources.

  • QS World 2025#466
  • Research citations7,838,804

This is a Bachelor of Science and the content shows it: cognitive psychology, development, social behaviour and neuroscience taught together.

Foundation courses come first, then electives let you pick a direction. Internships and research projects are pushed hard. The skills the programme names are research methodology, statistical analysis and clear communication, and graduates commonly go into human resources or community outreach.

17 Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration4 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • QS World 2023#467
  • Research citations2,178,269

Fairbanks offers psychology as a Bachelor of Arts. The content is familiar — thinking, development, social behaviour and research methods — but the teaching gives unusual weight to cultural context.

That matters in Alaska. The communities here are varied, and the course asks students to consider how culture shapes both research and practice. Research projects, internships and collaborative studies fill out the practical hours.

18 Bachelor Psychology

University of Hawaii at Manoa

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration4 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • QS World 2025#488
  • Research citations5,966,195

Manoa builds from core psychology into elective units that let you specialise. The elective list includes addiction, the psychology of diversity, and psychological research methods.

Culture runs through the programme rather than sitting in one class. Hawaii's mixed population means students meet different ideas about mental health at close range, which helps if you plan to work across communities. Research projects and quantitative work carry the technical side.

  • QS World 2024#545
  • Research citations4,302,690

Macaulay is an honours college, so the psychology degree is demanding and ends with a capstone project you design and defend yourself.

The four main areas are covered, with electives for specialisation. Statistical methods and written communication both get real attention. New York helps here: research groups and community organisations are within reach, and students often use those placements as the evidence in a graduate school application.

20 Bachelor Psychology

Lehigh University

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration4 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • QS World 2024#548
  • Research citations2,348,469

Lehigh lets you choose between a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science, and the choice changes the degree. The BA takes fewer psychology courses and more subjects outside the field.

The BSc is the heavier route. It adds set mathematics and science courses, and you must settle on one concentration. There are four: clinical and behavioural health, social psychology, developmental psychology, or cognition with cognitive neuroscience. It is built for students going on to graduate study, including medicine and related health fields. A minor is also offered.

Choosing a US psychology bachelor's: what applicants ask

BA or BSc in psychology — which one should I pick?

The BSc carries more mathematics, statistics and laboratory science, which is what postgraduate psychology admissions look for. Lehigh says plainly that its BSc is meant for advanced graduate study. The BA leaves far more room for subjects outside psychology, and suits students who want the degree as a broad base rather than a straight line into research.

Can a psychology bachelor's be studied online?

Yes. Florida runs its Bachelor of Arts in Psychology fully online, built for students who cannot attend a campus. Colorado State offers its Bachelor of Science both on campus and online. The science content does not shrink in either case — statistics, biology and mathematics stay in the programme.

What English score do these universities want?

Illinois Urbana-Champaign publishes IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0, and most American psychology departments sit around that mark. Each university sets its own figure, so check the one you are applying to rather than assuming a single national standard.

What work can I do with only a bachelor's in psychology?

The roles attached to these programmes include human resources, social services coordination, rehabilitation support, behavioural health work, community outreach and nonprofit programme roles. Clinical practice is different: calling yourself a psychologist and treating patients needs postgraduate study and a state licence.

Does a specialised degree like developmental psychology limit me?

Less than it looks. Minnesota-Twin Cities teaches developmental psychology on top of the same psychology foundations and the same research methods training, so the core is still there. A named specialism helps when you already know the field you want; a general degree is safer when you do not.
