Bachelors in Psychology Programs in the UK: Top 14

A UK undergraduate psychology degree carries a piece of professional machinery most subjects do not: accreditation by the British Psychological Society, which confers the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership. That one status is the difference between a degree that opens the professional training routes and a degree that is simply an interesting three or four years.

How this list is ordered: Ordered by each university's QS World University Rankings position where it has one, then by research citations recorded by OpenAlex; one programme per university, and universities with neither measure are left out.

What UK applicants and international applicants ask

How do I check whether a degree is BPS accredited?

Through the British Psychological Society's own accreditation listings, searching for the exact course title at the exact institution. Accreditation is not recorded in this list, it is held by individual degrees rather than by universities, and on joint or applied degrees it can depend on the modules you choose — so confirm the specific course and ask the department what you must take within it to retain the graduate basis.

Is a Scottish four-year degree better than an English three-year one?

They are different structures rather than different qualities. The Scottish honours degree takes four years and is entered a year earlier, with broader early years and the honours work concentrated at the end; the English honours degree takes three. Both can be accredited. Choose on the course content, the department and where you want to live.

Can I become a clinical psychologist with one of these degrees?

Not directly. The practitioner titles in the UK are protected by the Health and Care Professions Council and reached through postgraduate professional training, for which the BPS graduate basis is normally the entry requirement. An accredited undergraduate degree is the first step of a longer route, and relevant experience alongside it matters as much as the grade.

What is a top-up degree, and is it the same qualification?

A top-up completes a bachelor's degree for someone who already holds substantial prior credit, such as a foundation degree or an HND, usually in a shorter time than a full degree. The award is a bachelor's degree, but it is only available to applicants who already have the entry credit — and whether it carries BPS accreditation has to be checked for the top-up specifically.

Does a degree called forensic or criminal psychology lead to that career?

Not by itself. Forensic psychologist is a protected title reached through postgraduate training and registration. An undergraduate degree with forensic in the title may be a full psychology degree with a specialism, or it may be a criminology degree with psychology modules — the two entries of this kind in this list read differently from each other.
