PhD in Psychology Programs in the USA: Top 20

A doctorate is where psychology stops being a subject you study and becomes a career you are trained into — either as a researcher who will produce new findings, or as a health service psychologist licensed to assess and treat. American doctoral programmes split along exactly that line, and the two halves recruit differently, are funded differently and lead to different jobs.

How this list is ordered: Ordered by each university's QS World University Rankings position where it has one, then by research citations recorded by OpenAlex; one programme per university, and universities with neither measure are left out.

Questions worth settling before you apply

Is a Psy.D. worth less than a PhD?

No — they are built for different work. A Psy.D. concentrates training on clinical practice, a research PhD on producing research. For a career seeing clients, an accredited practice doctorate is the direct route. For an academic or research career, the dissertation and publication record is what gets read. The mistake is choosing one and wanting the other's outcome.

Can I get in straight from a bachelor's degree?

Often, yes. American doctoral programmes commonly admit from a bachelor's and award a master's along the way. Some of the programmes here state a master's as their entry requirement, so it varies by programme rather than by country — check each one's stated level before assuming you need a master's first.

Do all of these lead to a licence to practise?

No, and this is the most important distinction on the page. The experimental, applied experimental, developmental, community and health psychology programmes here are research degrees. The counselling, school and Psy.D. programmes are practice degrees. Licensure requirements are set by each state board, so confirm the position with the board where you intend to work.

How long does it really take?

Most records here say four to six years, which is a fair range for a US doctorate including the dissertation, and a practice doctorate usually adds a full-time internship year. Where a record gives credits or months instead of years, as a few here do, that is the more precise figure — and it is worth asking the department how long its students actually take rather than how long the programme is designed to take.

Why does the order put universities I have not heard of near the top?

Because the order is the university's research standing — QS World position where there is one, then OpenAlex citation counts — and only three of these twenty universities have a recorded QS position. For most of the list the ordering rests on citations alone, which track research output across the whole institution rather than the strength of its psychology department.
