Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Livelihoods and Farm Production

The Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Livelihoods and Farm Production (BSAL) at Mbarara University of Science and Technology is an interdisciplinary programme that integrates agricultural sciences and social sciences. Students study how to facilitate innovations in farm production and agribusiness, and how livelihood context and institutions mediate productive use of key resources. The course links key concepts to practice and policy, with emphasis on integrated livestock and crop-based farm production systems and value addition.

BSAL runs for 4 years full time. Over the duration of the programme, students build an in-depth understanding of agriculture with thematic coverage that includes basic principles in livelihood approaches and agricultural sciences, farming systems and entrepreneurship, and supporting agro-based livelihoods transformation. Students also develop transferable skills for information handling, analytical skills, numeracy, problem solving, team working, and critical thinking in research, policy, and practice.

Direct Entry: Two principal passes at UACE or its equivalent with one being in the following subjects: Agriculture, Foods and Nutrition, Biology or Chemistry and at least a subsidiary pass in any other A’ Level subject.

Diploma Entry: Diploma in any Agricultural related field.

Higher Education Access Certificate (HEAC): Holders of HEAC are eligible to apply to be considered for admission to the program. The admission decision will be based on performance in HEAC and whether they meet the specific admission requirements for BSAL.
