Bachelor of Arts Honours in Media and Journalism

The Bachelor of Arts Honours in Media and Journalism at Africa University is an undergraduate full-time programme based in the Department of Humanities & Social Sciences. It focuses on media and journalism with emphasis on the African context, while also developing skills and knowledge to compete in a global media context. Students study areas including journalism, media law and ethics, communication theory, media in Africa and beyond, democracy and human rights, and development communication.

Learning follows a structured course plan with modules such as Principles of Journalism and Mass Media, Media Law and Ethics, News Reporting and Writing, Broadcast Journalism, Photojournalism, Television Production, Digital Journalism, Media Research Methods, and a Honours Research Project. The programme includes industrial attachment with on-site continuous assessment and an industrial attachment full report. The programme takes place at the Main Campus over 4 year(s).

5 credit passes in GCE Ordinary Level examinations including English Language and at least 2 passes at Advanced Level in English and a pass in any one of the following subjects History, International Relations, Law, Sociology, Geography, Human Resources, Environmental Studies, Philosophy, Cultural Studies, Marketing, Computer Studies and Religious Studies. Mathematics is an added advantage

Equivalent passes in the applicant’s countries of origin will also be considered.

Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the English Language by either producing acceptable IELTS (a pass at band 6 and above) or TOEFL (a score of 600 and above).

Special Entry:

Notwithstanding the above, candidates with 5 O’Level passes including English Language and Mathematics with a minimum “C” grade and a relevant three-year Diploma in English and Communication Studies, Diploma in Journalism and Media Studies and Development Studies from a recognized and accredited institution may be granted admission to the first year of the Bachelor of Arts in Media and Journalism Honours degree programme.

Mature Entry

• Applicant must be at least 25 years of age at the time of application and on the first day of the academic year in which admission is sought and who are not eligible for entry under the normal regulations may apply for mature entry provided that the;
• Applicant must have obtained a minimum of 5 Ordinary Level subjects which should include a pass in English Language. In addition the applicant should have or possess the necessary industrial experience in Media, Film, Journalism or related fields
• Applicants will be expected to provide evidence of educational and professional activities and accomplishments indicating that they have the prior work experience needed to be successful to undertake this programme;
• Applicants should normally have completed their school or college studies at least five years prior to admission;
• Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the English Language by either producing acceptable IELTS (a pass at band 6 and above) or TOEFL (a score of 600 and above) results;
• Applicants who wish to be considered for Mature Entry may be required to attend interviews;
• Applicants who have previously taken courses for credit at some recognized institutions of learning will be required to submit transcripts from those institutions
