The Master of Arts Degree in Applied Linguistics (MAAL) at Midlands State University develops conceptual and inquisitive skills in literary and cultural studies and builds competence in specialist literary studies areas. It also aims to generate interest in research in literature and linguistics and to widen knowledge, competencies, skills, and capabilities in literature and linguistics. Areas of study focus on Linguistics and Communication, with a research and innovation orientation and practically oriented teaching and learning.
Teaching and learning use lectures, tutorials, seminars, group work, research project, and individual independent study. Assessment includes written and oral examinations, tests, seminar presentations, and a final year research project report. The programme uses modules in phonetics and phonology of English, syntax and semantics of English, theories of second language acquisition, genre in English, discourse analysis of English, and teaching English as a second language, ending with a dissertation in Applied English Linguistics.
