The Master of Arts Degree in Global History (AH19) at Midlands State University focuses on historical methods and research skills, the global system, globalization, environment and strategies for human development, decolonisation, new states and the global system, and gender, labour and migration. Students also study national identities and global citizenship and regional modules covering Africa and the modern world, Europe and Russia, Asia and global connections, international terrorism, and the Americas and the Pacific Basin.
Programme delivery includes a specialised methodological and historiographical course. Students use sources such as radio, television, film, and internet-based sources such as Wikileaks, alongside topical specialised options covering approaches to history and every region on the globe. The programme includes independent research, book reviews, and presentations by specialists such as international civil servants, guest speakers, war veterans, and NGOs.
Successful completion opens occupational fields in academia, support for international NGOs, research institutions and associations, museums, policy think-tanks, national and international civil services, non-governmental organisations, galleries, libraries, and historic trusts. Graduates may also enter business, media, public administration, or marketing, and may pursue a doctorate, as the programme is committed to the education of qualified future historians.
