The Master of Science Degree in Global Peace and Security Studies (MGPSS) at Midlands State University prepares students with theoretical and practical skills in global peace and security studies. Students study global, peace and security; gender peace and conflict; research methods; and theory of intelligence strategy. The programme also covers international institutions and peacekeeping in Africa, media conflict and communication, conflict transformation processes, international law, crisis monitoring and conflict early warning systems, and terrorism, counterterrorism and (de)radicalisation.
Teaching and learning use lectures, group research and discussions, and individual study. Assessment includes oral presentations, written assignments, and tests. The programme includes intensive skills training and policy workshops and links module content to real-life issues and challenges faced by policy-makers and practitioners. The assessment pattern includes continuous assessment and end-of-semester written examinations. A dissertation module is also included.
This part-time master’s programme is designed for professionals, graduate students, young researchers, and other academics interested in peace and conflict studies. It leads to roles such as diplomatic service officers, government officers, intelligence officers and analysts, policy officers, and civil service officers. Further study is listed as a doctoral degree in global peace and security studies.
