The Midlands State University Master of Science Degree in Migration, Citizenship and Refugee Protection (MCRP) builds a broad theoretical understanding of human mobility and the role of internal and international migration in economic and political processes, social change, and globalisation. It includes debates and literature on migration, citizenship, and refugee protection from different disciplinary perspectives, with a focus on migration analysis, forced migration, and humanitarian and refugee law.
Students study modules covering migration and demography, international humanitarian law and refugee law in an African context, and the political economy of migration, citizenship, and refugee protection. Teaching and learning uses virtual or face-to-face lectures, tutorials, seminars, group work, presentations, public lectures, practicals, dissertation work, field trips, and independent study. Assessment includes written and oral examinations, tests, seminar presentations, continuous assessment, and a dissertation.
The programme is designed for development practitioners, academics, researchers, and policymakers working in government, non-government organisations, institutions of higher learning, research institutes, diplomatic communities, international non-governmental and inter-governmental organisations, and UN agencies. It can also lead to Doctor of Philosophy studies in Migration Studies, Refugee Studies, Displacement Studies, and related fields.
