The Master of Technology in Medical Ultrasound at Harare Institute of Technology is advanced, hands-on training for specialists who operate ultrasound machines to produce diagnostic images. Students develop knowledge and application of ultrasound physics, use medical ultrasound scanning protocols for patient management, and build understanding of anatomy, normal variants, and pathology across the abdomen, small parts, obstetrics, and gynaecology.
The programme includes clinical practice across Clinical Practice I, Clinical Practice II, Clinical Practice III, and Clinical Practice IV, with opportunities for inter-professional learning during clinical placement. Students also complete focused modules such as Ultrasound Physics & Instrumentation, Medical Ethics, Vascular Technology, Echocardiography, Paediatric Ultrasound, Musculoskeletal Ultrasound, Small Parts, and Foetal Medicine/Advanced Abdominal Ultrasound Techniques. Research training includes Health and social care Research methods, Ultrasound Case studies, and a Research project, plus Seminar in Semester IV.
On completion, a candidate can be registered with the Allied Health Practitioner’s Council of Zimbabwe on the Specialist register. The programme supports skill development for autonomous advanced practice by ensuring clinical competencies meet national and international standards.
