Ernährungswissenschaft

Ernährungswissenschaft is a Bachelor program taught at Universität Potsdam, Germany. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 years) options.

Ernährungswissenschaft at Universität Potsdam is a Bachelor of Science that studies the effect and function of food ingredients, the processes of food utilization, and the mechanisms that explain signal cascades in metabolism. The programme covers biochemistry, food chemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, cell biology, physiology, and toxicology, including their links to disease conditions.

The degree is structured as an Ein-Fach-Bachelor with 180 Leistungspunkte. It is divided into a four-semester Teil I with science basics and a two-semester Teil II for subject-specific extension and depth. The Bachelorarbeit is usually an experimental thesis, with the option to carry it out externally in an industry business or clinic on application.

The programme is described as preparing students for applied nutritional science research and for a consecutive research-oriented master’s programme. Universität Potsdam states that the Bachelor degree is not the same as training as an Ernährungsberater or Ernährungsberaterin, but it can qualify graduates for work in this area and also for media work and for national and international organizations and authorities.
