Introduction

Geowissenschaften at Universität Potsdam is a Bachelor of Science Ein-Fach-Bachelor that examines Earth as a dynamic system shaped by physical, chemical, and biological processes. Students study the structure and development of the Earth’s crust, transport of matter at and within the Earth, physical and chemical processes that form mountain ranges and ocean basins, and earth history from a palaeo-environment perspective.

The program is modular and covers teaching formats that can include lectures, exercises, practicals, and seminars. It includes field exercises and field practice, plus mapping courses in Germany and abroad (for example, Anfängerübungen in the Harz and courses in Südfrankreich, Südspanien, Schweden, and the Alpen). Modules are designed around an 6 Leistungspunkte size, and passing a module earns the Leistungspunkte set for that module.

The degree supports future tasks in areas listed by Universität Potsdam, including foundational research, resource prospection, consulting for domain-specific problems, renewable energy development and underground storage, natural disaster prevention, and work involving geoinformation systems and satellite remote sensing, industrial material research, and instrumental analytics.
