The Economics and Business major at Hampden-Sydney College explores the world using economic analysis tools, emphasizing critical thinking and the ability to operate successfully. Students study economics-focused courses, with options including commerce and finance, public policy, health, globalization and the environment, and advanced theory such as financial analysis, Austrian theory, econometrics, history of thought, and mathematical economics.

Teaching is supported by an economics introduction designed for students beyond economics majors, described as an “as if it were the only course” approach. Selected economics students may also join TigerFund, an equities portfolio managed entirely by students. The department also offers structured opportunities tied to internships and research grants, including the Citrone Economics and Business Summer Research Program and the Citrone Economics and Business Summer Internship Program.
