Introduction

Mathematics is a Bachelor program taught at Pitzer College, USA. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 years) options.

The Mathematics major at Pitzer College leads to a Bachelor of Arts. Students study core areas including calculus across three semesters, linear algebra, and differential equations or a mathematical modeling course with extensive use of differential equations. The major also includes discrete mathematics (MATH 055 PZ) and a set of upper-division mathematics courses chosen with an advisor for depth and breadth.

Coursework includes two courses outside of mathematics that emphasize application of mathematics or connections to other disciplines, selected in consultation with an advisor. Students also complete MATH 198 PZ - Math Forum, a 0-credit course offered every semester that provides experience in mathematical exposition and presentations for math majors/minors before they earn their degree, with MATH 055 PZ as a prerequisite. The program supports interdisciplinary learning through a co-taught course, Limitless Boundaries: The Art and Math of Surfaces.

Students with an overall grade-point average of 3.5 or above, a Mathematics grade-point average of 3.5 or above, and completion of a Senior Thesis of honors quality may be recommended for Honors at graduation.

Pitzer College also offers combined programs that lead to both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degree, including Applied Mathematics, Scientific Computing, Statistics and Operations Research, Teaching of Mathematics, and Pure Mathematics, for students who consult with mathematics faculty early in their undergraduate years.
