The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) serves as the focal point for the political process aimed at addressing the challenges posed by climate change. The UNFCCC secretariat actively supports the Convention, the Kyoto Protocol, and the historic Paris Agreement through a variety of activities. These include providing both substantive and organizational assistance to meetings of the Parties and ensuring the implementation of commitments. Operating in a dynamic and politically challenging environment, the UNFCCC seeks to contribute to resolving one of the most critical environmental issues of our time.

About the Internship Program:

The Internship Program is part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and is focused on three main areas: Administrative Services, Human Resources, and Information and Communication Technology. These areas are essential for supporting the work of governments and related organizations, managing conferences and meetings, dealing with rules under the Kyoto Protocol, and handling everyday tasks of the UNFCCC.

In the Human Resources (HR) section, the team works on planning the workforce, finding the right talent, shaping the organization’s culture, and handling HR tasks following the rules of the UN. They want to make sure the UNFCCC is diverse in terms of where people come from and their gender, and the Talent Management and Workforce Planning team, which is part of HR, helps with that.

Interns in this program work under the Chief of Human Resources and collaborate with the Human Resources team on tasks related to protocols. The internship is hands-on and involves tasks like updating files, following new rules, improving communication within the organization, and helping with data analysis. The internship lasts for at least four months, up to a maximum of six months, depending on the intern’s availability, the program’s needs, and how well the intern is doing in their university studies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The intern is expected to contribute to the overall implementation of the Headquarters Agreement (HQA) concerning the legal status of UN staff members in Bonn, Germany. Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  1. Update Protocol Files and Database: Regularly update protocol files and enter information into the database.
  2. Organize and Maintain Hard Copy Protocol Files: Clear and update hard copy protocol files in the filing room.
  3. Support Implementation of New Rules and Guidelines: Assist in implementing new rules and guidelines related to HQA.
  4. Internal Communication and Protocol Page Revision: Support internal communication efforts and revise the protocol page in Sia (presumably a system or platform).
  5. Data Analysis and Reporting: Contribute to data analysis and reporting of protocol activities, including fine-tuning the protocol database.
  6. Contribute to Efficiency and Communication Improvement: Assist in continual improvement efforts related to efficiency and communication within the Human Resources unit.
  7. Engage in Other Protocol-Related Tasks: Collaborate on various other protocol-related tasks as needed.

Timeframe:

The internship period spans a minimum of four to a maximum of six months, with the exact duration determined based on the intern’s availability, program needs, and ongoing university enrollment and performance.

Required Qualifications, Skills and Experiences:

Education: Candidates must be enrolled in the last year of an undergraduate degree or in a Master’s or PhD program at a recognized university at the time of application and throughout the internship.

Language: Fluent in English (both oral and written). Knowledge of an additional UN language is considered an asset.

Preferred Fields of Study: Studies in Business Administration, Law, Communications, International Relations, Economics, or related fields are preferred.

Experience and Skills:

  • Exposure to or experience in Human Resources, especially in Talent Acquisition/Recruitment, and/or an international environment is an asset.
  • Excellent skills in office applications (Microsoft Suite) and proficiency in emerging tools.
  • Strong skills in data analysis using various tools and platforms.

Computer Requirements for Remote Internship:

  • A laptop or desktop PC with Windows 10 or newer, or a Mac with the latest MacOS update.
  • A reliable, high-speed internet connection.
  • Antivirus application with regular updates.
  • Browsers must be up-to-date with regular updates enabled.
  • Regular Windows 10 updates should be enabled for Windows laptops or PCs.
  • A mobile phone for Multifactor Authentication (MFA) through SMS or the Authenticator App.

Internship Conditions:

  • UNFCCC secretariat internships are unpaid.
  • The selected intern is responsible for all costs before, during, and after the internship assignment.
  • Interns are not considered staff members of the UNFCCC secretariat.
  • The selected intern is expected to work full-time (40 hours per week) at the UNFCCC premises in Bonn, Germany.
