Responsibilities:

  1. Processing Archival Records: Execute the processing of archival records in accordance with the ISAD(G) standard.
  2. Archival Records Housing: Organize archival records by housing them in designated archival folders and boxes, and manage other repository-related responsibilities.
  3. Descriptive Metadata Creation: Develop descriptive metadata for archival records, actively contributing to the creation of finding aids for enhanced accessibility.
  4. Physical Records Preparation for Digitization: Prepare physical records to facilitate the digitization process, ensuring a seamless transition to modern archival practices.
  5. Access and Reference Services: Provide essential access and reference services to support the utilization of archival materials.
  6. Additional Duties: Undertake any other duties as deemed necessary for the effective functioning of the archives.

Expected Deliverables:

  • Archival Finding Aids: Create comprehensive archival finding aids to facilitate easy navigation and retrieval of information.
  • Descriptive Metadata Lists: Generate detailed lists of descriptive metadata, contributing to a well-organized archival system.
  • Digitization of Archival Items: Actively participate in the digitization process of selected archival items, fostering the preservation of historical records.
  • Proper Storage of Archival Items: Ensure that archival items are stored appropriately in labeled folders and boxes, maintaining an organized and accessible repository.

Qualification Criteria:

  1. Age and Legal Requirements:
    • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
    • Legal status in the US with permission to work is mandatory.
  2. Family Relations:
    • Candidates should not have immediate family members employed in any UNICEF office, and they should not have relatives in positions of authority over the intern.
  3. Academic Qualifications:
    • Enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program in archival studies, library & information sciences, or a related field is necessary.
    • Recent graduates within the past two years with specific post-secondary education in relevant areas are eligible.
    • Strong academic performance demonstrated by recent records is required.
    • A reference letter from a current or past academic supervisor is mandatory.
  4. Professional Background:
    • A demonstrated understanding of international archival standards, particularly ISAD(G), is essential.
    • Proficiency in archival metadata standards and their practical application is required.
  5. Language Skills:
    • Fluency in English is a prerequisite.
    • Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is considered an asset.
  6. Compensation and Insurance:
    • UNICEF will provide a monthly stipend for the duration of the internship.
    • There is no guarantee of employment at the conclusion of the internship.
    • Candidates are responsible for their insurance coverage, and proof of enrollment in a health/accident plan is required before commencing the internship.
