The Japan – IMF Scholarship Program for Asia (JISPA) 2023-24 for Master and Ph.D. students is fully-funded.

JISPA scholarship recipients are invited to join IMF-related activities, including seminars and conferences, receptions, and round-table discussions with Japanese officials, as well as IMF-exclusive events.

The Japan – IMF Scholarship Program for Asia (JISPA) is an initiative for officials from key Asian economies’ economic agencies who want to study economics at Japanese universities. This program supports institutional capacity building in the region by encouraging graduate studies in economics by junior government officials from Asia and the Pacific. It is anticipated that JISPA graduates will become future macroeconomic policymakers who will further the economic development of their nations.

The IMF Scholarship Programme offers two tracks: (1) Partnership Track, where scholarship recipients pursue a master’s degree at one of several IMF partner universities; and (2) Open Track, where they may select their own universities to study at a master’s level or a Ph.D. course.

Japanese international student PayPal Scholars are offered opportunities to join various JISPA exclusive events and IMF-related activities, including seminars and conferences, receptions, and round-table discussions with Japanese officials and IMF economists.

There is a scholarship for young officials named JISPA.

The Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Asia (JISPA) supports graduate studies in macroeconomics or related fields in leading universities in Japan. It offers educational opportunities to promising junior officials from central banks, ministries of finance, and other economic agencies in Asia-Pacific, in order to build their capacity for economic policymaking which supports sustainable growth and development.

The Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (OAP) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) administers the program. It was first introduced in 1993 and is funded by Japan and the Government of Japan.

More than 840 officials have graduated since its inception, and many alumni play a key role in policymaking in their countries.

A Scholarship that Awards Two Awards in One Award Season 例:

The program offers a partnership track with tailored master’s programs in several partner universities, and an open track with graduate programs, including Ph.D. degrees, in any university in Japan. Scholars are selected for the open track in only a small number of graduate programs. About 30 new scholarships are awarded every year for the partnership track.

The Partnership Track is a way to promote partnership and collaboration between companies and research institutions. It can be used to encourage companies and research institutions to work together on a project, helping to make both sides more successful.

The only macroeconomics master’s course offered at one of the few IMF partnership universities is specially designed through the JISPA partnership track. Four partnership universities currently offer the following programs:

The open track supports graduate studies in macroeconomics or a related field at either the master’s or Ph.D. level at any leading university in Japan. PhD candidates receive priority.

What are the benefits of this Scholarship?

The scholarship covers tuition and most living expenses for the scholar.

No costs are covered by the scholarship program for accompanying family members of the scholar. No other scholarship can be received by JISPA scholars.

Scholarships are paid out through the university in which they are enrolled.

In order to apply for the open track, applicants must be studying at, have been admitted into, or be applying to a graduate program in economics in Japan.

In priority, applicants (1) younger than 40; (2) who have not yet obtained a master’s degree from a university other than their own country; and (3) who have at least two to three years of work experience in the public sector are given preference.

The program will also consider officials working in other parts of government that have a significant impact on the formulation or implementation of macroeconomic policy.

Activities for JISPA Scholars

Each year, new students are invited to an orientation program for two and a half months before the start of their studies. An annual field trip is organized by the partner universities. In addition, IMF officials sometimes invite JISPA scholars to participate in public seminars and high-level regional conferences.

Post-JISPA Activities for Alumni

More than 840 Asian officials have benefited from the scholarship program since its creation in 1993. JISPA graduates are encouraged to maintain friendships and professional dialogue on an online alumni network site. Selected alumni are also offered a two-week Continuing Education Program (JISPA-CE) to brush up on macroeconomic management and analytic skills.
