Bachelors in Law Programs in India: Top 11

India admits students to law straight from school, through the five-year integrated degree that pairs law with arts, commerce or business — and that is what most of the eleven programmes below are. The alternative, a three-year LL.B. taken after a first degree, is the other route into the same profession, and which one suits you depends mostly on when you decide.

How this list is ordered: Ordered by each university's QS World University Rankings position where it has one, then by research citations recorded by OpenAlex; one programme per university, and universities with neither measure are left out.

Studying law in India: questions that matter

Should I take the five-year integrated degree or a three-year LL.B.?

The integrated degree is entered from school and awards both qualifications together, which is faster overall. The three-year LL.B. follows any bachelor's degree and suits people who decide later or want a substantive first discipline. Both lead to the same professional qualification, so choose on timing rather than on prestige.

How do I check that a law college is approved?

Against the Bar Council of India's own published list, and for the specific law programme rather than the university as a whole — an institution can run approved and unapproved courses together. Approval is not recorded in this list, and without it you may be unable to enrol as an advocate however good the teaching was.

What do I have to do after the degree to practise?

Enrol with a state bar council, then pass the All India Bar Examination, which confers the certificate of practice. Enrolment comes before the examination. If your aim is the judiciary instead, that is entered through separate state judicial services examinations rather than through the bar.

Is a national law university worth targeting?

If you want a career in the larger law firms or in top-tier litigation, yes — they are specialist law institutions established by statute, admit through a national entrance test, and are recruited from heavily. The entrance examination is the gate, and it has to be prepared for well in advance of the application window.

What is B.Com. LL.B. and who is it for?

An integrated degree pairing commerce with law instead of arts, which suits anyone heading towards corporate, tax, banking or commercial practice. The law half is the same; the difference is the first discipline alongside it, and it shapes what you can specialise in comfortably later.
