Bachelors in Law Programs in the USA: Top 20

20 of the 849 Bachelor's Law programmes educads records in the USA, one from each of 20 universities, with the facts we hold for each one.

How this list is ordered: Ordered by each university's QS World University Rankings position where it has one, then by research citations recorded by OpenAlex; one programme per university, and universities with neither measure are left out.

Read this first: there is no undergraduate law degree for practising in the USA

This is the single most important thing on the page, and it surprises most international applicants. In the United States you cannot become a lawyer with a bachelor's degree in law. The qualifying law degree is the JD, a graduate degree taken after a bachelor's in any subject.

So what are the programmes in this list? They are undergraduate degrees about law, and they do real work:

  • Legal studies / law & society — law as an academic subject, often as preparation for a JD.
  • Pre-law tracks — usually a major in something else (political science, philosophy, economics) with advising aimed at law school admission.
  • Paralegal studies — a vocational qualification for working in legal support, which is a career in itself and not a stepping stone to practice.

If your aim is to practise law in the US, the honest sequence is: bachelor's in any subject → LSAT → JD at an ABA-approved law school → state bar exam. If you already hold a law degree from another country, the route is an LLM, not an undergraduate degree — and that has its own strict rules.

What a pre-law bachelor's should actually give you

Law schools do not require a particular major. What admission turns on is your grade point average and your LSAT score, so the practical questions about an undergraduate programme are different from what the prospectus emphasises:

AskWhy
Is there dedicated pre-law advising? Application timing, school selection and personal statements are where applicants lose ground, and good advising is worth more than any single course.
How much writing is assessed? Legal work is writing. A degree with heavy written assessment prepares you for both the LSAT's reasoning and the JD itself.
Is there LSAT preparation or support? The LSAT weighs heavily in admission and is a learnable test.
Does it stand on its own? Plans change. A degree that is only useful if you get into law school is a narrow bet.

A paralegal qualification is a different proposition again: it is a job-ready credential, and asking whether it leads to practice misunderstands what it is for.

Common questions

Can I become a lawyer in the USA with a bachelor's in law?

No. The qualifying degree is the JD, a graduate degree taken after a bachelor's in any subject, followed by a state bar exam. Undergraduate law programmes in the US are academic or vocational, not qualifying.

Which major is best for law school?

Law schools do not require a particular major; admission rests largely on GPA and LSAT score. Choose a subject you will do well in and that involves substantial writing — both help more than the subject label.

I have a law degree from my own country. Do I need this?

No — your route is an LLM, which in some states can make you eligible to sit a bar exam. New York, for example, has detailed credit and structure requirements for that. An undergraduate US law degree would not help you.

Is paralegal studies a route to becoming a lawyer?

No. It is a vocational qualification for legal support work, which is a career in its own right. Becoming a lawyer still requires a JD and bar admission.

Why does this list not show tuition?

A recorded fee exists for only about 2% of the programmes in our database, so a fee column would be blank on most rows. Duration, intake and study mode are shown because those are on the record.

How to use the list above

The order is by the research standing of the university — QS World position where there is one, then OpenAlex citations — one programme per university. For an undergraduate pre-law degree this is a loose proxy; what matters more is the quality of pre-law advising and how the degree's graduates actually fare in law school admission.

Use it as a shortlist, then ask each programme what proportion of its pre-law students apply to law school and where they are admitted — and treat an unwillingness to answer as information.
