The Bachelor of Arts Special Honours in Literature in English is a literature-focused degree for students who have a first degree in Literature in English. Students study Western theories of literature and criticism, African theories of literature and criticism, Francophone and Lusophone literature in Africa, Southern African literature, Caribbean literature, and research methods. Core study also includes children’s literature in Africa, English literature, and African American literature.
The course is organised across an academic year with two semesters. In academic year 1, semester 1, students take Western theories of literature and criticism, African theories of literature and criticism, Francophone and Lusophone literature in Africa, Southern African literature, Caribbean literature (II), research methods, and a research project. In academic year 1, semester 2, students take children’s literature in Africa, English literature, African American literature (II), and a dissertation.
