The Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Optometry is designed to prepare students to perform a comprehensive eye examination using special instruments. The course covers eye examinations and tests for the outside and inside of the eye, determining the level of eyesight, and detecting visual anomalies such as refractive errors. It also includes training to recognize and diagnose ocular diseases, including squint, subnormal vision, and conditions such as glaucoma and cataract, plus common eye infections. Students also learn to identify eye features linked to systemic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.
Students are taught to carry out examinations and tests on patients of all ages, from toddlers to the elderly. Clinical experience begins in part three, where students see patients in the clinic under supervision and complete clinical attachments through collaboration with the private sector and local Government hospital’s ophthalmology department. The programme also includes co-management with cross referral, low vision management, and opportunities in academia, private practice, Government Hospitals, and optical manufacturing industry.
