The Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Optometry (HBScOPT) prepares students to perform comprehensive eye examinations using special instruments. Students are taught to examine the outside and inside of the eye, determine eyesight level, and conduct eye tests for patients of all ages. Teaching covers detection of visual anomalies such as refractive errors, recognition and diagnosis of ocular diseases (including squint, subnormal vision, glaucoma, cataract, and common eye infections), and identification of eye features linked to systemic conditions.
The programme includes classroom learning and clinical experience. Students gain clinical exposure in part three by seeing patients in the clinic under supervision, with clinical attachments through collaboration with the private sector and local government hospital ophthalmology departments. Optometry training also includes co-management with cross referral to medical practitioners, specialist ophthalmologists, orthoptists, and rehabilitation specialists for low vision management. Teaching uses hybrid methods through internet access via Moodle and face-to-face sessions with lecturers.
