Master of Science Degree in Animal Breeding and Biotechnology Mabb

The Master of Science degree in Animal Breeding and Biotechnology (MABB) at Midlands State University is designed to develop students who can work in animal breeding and biotechnology and create new value through products and services within the areas covered by the program. Core study areas include biometry, reproductive anatomy and physiology, molecular biotechnology, animal genetics and genetic resource conservation, and population and quantitative genetics, supported by a seminar on research ethics, biosecurity, and animal welfare.

The programme includes at least 32 taught modules across six teaching semesters, plus a dissertation. Teaching modules include Animal Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and Proteomics, Microbial and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Genomics, and Applied Animal Breeding. Practical and lab-focused content is described inside modules, including reproductive tract evaluation and semen quality analysis, molecular methods such as polymerase chain reaction and gel electrophoresis, and proteomics using mass spectrometry and microarrays.

Graduates are expected to create their own business in animal breeding and to work as animal breeders, biotechnologists, and farm managers, as researchers in public and private institutions, and as consultants in the Animal Breeding Industry. Further studies include doctoral studies in Animal Breeding / Biotechnology.

To be admitted to this programme a prospective student should satisfy the following conditions:

• Have an Honours degree (class 2.2/GPA 2.0 or better) in Agriculture or the biological sciences in the following disciplines; Animal Science, Biological Science, Biotechnology and Natural Resources, or related fields from an accredited University. Candidates with a third class will be required to attend an interview to assess their competence.
• Have a General degree in Animal Science, Biological Science, Biotechnology, and Natural Resources plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Agricultural Studies from an accredited institution of higher learning.
