The Master of Technology Degree in Industrial Biotechnology at Harare Institute of Technology trains students to apply computational methods, cultivate microorganisms and other biological sources, extract and purify industrially relevant biochemicals, and identify and manipulate genes for producing those biochemicals. Graduates also design bioprocesses for mass cultivation and mass production, and apply design thinking to create or improve a biochemical production-based business.
Teaching is organised across four semesters. Semester I includes Advanced Enzyme Biotechnology, Microbial and Fungal Biotechnology, Advanced Molecular Biotechnology, Advanced Plant Biotechnology, Advanced Fermentation Biotechnology, and Advanced Environmental Biotechnology. Semester II combines Postharvest Physiology and Technology, Pharmaceutical and Medical Biotechnology, Bioinformatics And Computational Biotechnology, Bioprocess and Bioseparations Technology, Innovation and Design Thinking, and electives. Semester III and Semester IV include Research Methodologies or Research Methodology, Seminar, and a Project.
