The Master of Social Science in Development Studies at Africa University is a postgraduate, full-time programme focused on the study of development in Africa. It aims to provide advanced academic training grounded in Africa’s historical context, experiences, and aspirations. Students develop critical analytical skills to examine the relationship and gaps between development theory and practice, and they study theoretical and conceptual knowledge applied to practical issues of development and social change in Africa.
The programme includes modules such as Current Theories and Paradigms in Development Studies, Ethics and Principles of Development, Critical Social Policy in African Development, Urbanization and Citizen Struggles in Contemporary Africa, Advanced Research Methods, and Critical Gender and Development Studies in Africa. It also includes modules on issues in the political economy of African development, civil societies and non-governmental organizations, and mobilities. The programme culminates in a Dissertation.
