Bachelor's in Earth and Climate Sciences
Introduction
Earth and Climate Sciences is a Bachelor program taught at Bates College, USA. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.
Earth and Climate Sciences at Bates focuses on scientific issues connected to energy, mineral, and water resource security, ecosystem and environmental stewardship, hazards risk assessment, adaptation and mitigation, and climate variability and change. Students study the planet as a dynamic, interconnected system, investigating planetary history and habitability across spatial and temporal scales. Course topics include processes that shape Earth over deep time and the impacts of tectonic ruptures and rapid anthropogenic change.
Learning is built around translating complex data into narratives for policymakers, the public, and the scientific community. Students also design and conduct independent research and work with faculty and collaborators. Bates emphasizes application of field observations from the Maine coast to global climate models, along with hands-on laboratory, field, and computational skills. Students present research at professional regional and national conferences.
