Bachelor's in History of Art and Visual Culture
Introduction
History of Art and Visual Culture is a Bachelor program taught at Bates College, USA. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time options.
The History of Art and Visual Culture major in Art and Visual Culture at Bates College has two tracks: history and criticism, and studio art. History and criticism courses focus on images, objects, and architecture made by people from different periods and places, with students situating works in historical and social contexts. Studio art courses concentrate on making, including animation, ceramics, drawing, film, painting, photography, and print.
Students develop an independent voice through critical analysis or creative production and explore sociohistorical context, as well as how art and visual culture can be examined through power and privilege. Studio art majors complete a yearlong thesis that concludes in an exhibition of their work at the Bates Museum of Art. History and criticism-focused majors complete independent research projects that may include hands-on experience in museums and archives.
Graduates pursue careers in museum and curatorial studies, architecture, art therapy, education, film, and art conservation. Some alumni also become museum directors, arts policy leaders, professional fine artists, and corporate consultants, and many pursue MFA and Ph. D. degrees.
