Black Studies
Introduction
Black Studies is a Bachelor program taught at Bennington College, USA. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 years) options.
Black Studies at Bennington College explores and participates in the history of the African and Afro-diasporic community of thinkers and makers. The curriculum uses an interdisciplinary, student-designed approach to help students draw on multiple resources to develop their own perspectives on representations of Blackness and the Black body. The program also examines assumptions, objects of study, practices, and limits in other established disciplines.
Students complete culminating projects that include research on specific issues, development of informed and innovative thinking, and/or creation of new ways to express and communicate understanding of Black Studies. Learning is supported through the annual Field Work Term. Students may center learning through an internship with a professional organization, an independent study or research project, or collaborative work with a thinker, artist, and professional.
Many students also choose a term studying away from Bennington, either internationally or domestically. Study away may support academic interests through another lens and create time and space to center voices students may not regularly hear. Possible study-away options described include programs connected to conservation efforts led by queer communities of color, intersections of fashion and music, and research on race and identity in an Afro-diasporic community.
