Dance

Dance is a Bachelor program taught at Bennington College, USA. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 years) options.

Bennington College offers a Dance major focused on making original work. Students study technical practice, somatic study, improvisational and compositional research, peer and faculty collaboration, interdisciplinary investigation, and design, production, and performance. The program places creative work in a cultural and historical context and supports students in developing their understanding of the creative process and their awareness and articulation of how they think and move.

Students begin making dances immediately and then make and perform new work through the course of their study, working alone or in collaboration with others. At the weekly Dance Workshop, students from first-year through graduate gather with the full faculty to show and respond to works-in-progress. Students are encouraged to participate in production and experiment in multiple spaces, including the Martha Hill Dance Theater, intimate studios, and alternative site-specific locations. The program also includes a Bennington BFA Dance Lab with a physically and intellectually rigorous curriculum.

Students work closely with faculty to design the content, structure, and sequence of their study and practice through a Plan. Whether dance is central or supporting, students are invited to collaborate, make new work, show it, talk about it, revise it, and perform it again. An annual Field Work Term invites connections with the outside dance world through Bennington’s professional network and alumni dancers.
