Introduction

Animation & Production Design is a Bachelor program taught at Bennington College, USA. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 years) options.

Animation & Production Design at Bennington College is designed around student work with faculty to create a Plan for study and practice. Students learn animation fundamentals, including stop motion, single cell drawings, models and objects, erasing drawings, and CGI. They also use content sources such as current affairs, narratives, poems, short stories, and visual stimuli, and connect their work to historical context.

The program covers production tools used in animation, including DragonFrame, MAYA, Adobe After Effects, Premier, Photoshop, laser cutting for silhouettes and forms, green screen areas, multi-plane set ups, copy stands, and motion tracks. Projection design work uses live manipulated footage, previously created footage, and projection on varied surfaces and spaces, with tools such as Isadora and QLab. Set/production design is anchored in drama, supporting student- and faculty-directed productions, including puppet shows of different sizes.

At the end of each term, each class presents a public showing of final animations. Recent graduate school acceptances mentioned include Cal Arts, Royal College of Art, London, University of Southern California, University of South Wales, and University of Edinburgh.
