Introduction
Sociolinguistics is a Bachelor program taught at Bennington College, USA. Intake: Fall, Spring. The program is offered in campus-based modes with full-time (4 years) options.
The Sociolinguistics degree at Bennington College studies how language works in human society and how social factors shape language structures. Students examine language in the construction of identity and in passive perceptions and active expressions of social positionality, including topics such as interactional accommodation, pragmatic stance, gender/sexuality, group affiliation, and social mobility. They also study cognitive and structural aspects of language as a system and as contextualized behavior.
Students work closely with faculty to design the content, structure, and sequence of their study and practice, called their Plan. They use resources inside and outside the classroom to support their work. The degree emphasizes combining qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis through critical evaluation of traditional and current approaches.
