The Master's Programme in Life Science Informatics at the University of Helsinki trains experts who combine mathematical, statistical and computational methods with biological and medical research questions. It covers genomics, ecology and systems medicine, and it includes three study tracks: Bioinformatics and Systems Medicine, Biostatistics, and Mathematical and Statistical Ecology.
The degree totals 120 ECTS credits and is planned to take two years. The structure includes 15 credits of core introductory courses, 65–105 credits of advanced studies in the chosen specialisation, including a 30-credit Master's thesis, and 0–35 credits of elective studies from the programme or from other University of Helsinki programmes. Teaching is in English and delivered as contact teaching. Students choose their study track during the first year.
The programme is designed for students with a strong background in mathematics, statistics or computer science, including those who studied these subjects as a minor alongside a major in biology, ecology, genetics or another life science field. The University of Helsinki says the degree provides a foundation for doctoral studies and, with pedagogical studies, formal competence to work as a teacher at secondary school level.
You are eligible to apply if you hold a bachelor's degree in a suitable field, or will complete one before the programme begins, and have completed 25 credits in one of mathematics, statistics or computer science, and 15 credits in another of these three fields.
