The programme covers materials science from the viewpoint of present-day research and practice. It includes advanced metallic materials, ceramics, carbon-based materials, polymers and biopolymers, and minerals. It also considers the size effect of materials on structure at macro, micro and nano scale.
LUT describes the programme as unique in Finland because it combines materials science and production engineering. It includes project courses where you apply material knowledge in practice. These projects are carried out in close cooperation with Finnish and global industries.
The programme prepares you to understand material selection, production technology and the multi-disciplinary design process of products. It also develops knowledge of modelling metallic and composite materials, process–microstructure–properties–performance relations, and the circular economy.
