Research Chemists, Master of Science (Chemistry)

The Master’s Degree Programme for Research Chemists is a two-year English-taught programme at the University of Eastern Finland in Joensuu. It is focused on training chemistry researchers. Students study scientific research methodologies and professional practices in chemistry, and the programme includes compulsory and elective courses. Students may also add courses from other departments to their personal study plan.

A key part of the degree is research work. Students join a research group during their studies and carry out assigned research projects as active members of the group. The thesis project is completed in a research group and concludes the degree. The programme also includes mandatory Finnish language courses.

Students choose their research projects and thesis topics from the department’s research groups. The research focus areas listed include inorganic chemistry, inorganic and organometallic synthesis, structural chemistry, photonics, organic chemistry, protein crystallography and mass spectrometry, biological chemistry, biofuels, materials chemistry, functional materials, polymers, catalysis, physical chemistry, theoretical chemistry and molecular modelling, and surface chemistry.
