B Sc Hons in Sociology and Gender Development Studies

The B.Sc Hons in Sociology and Gender Development Studies at Women’s University in Africa prepares students to use sociological and gender development perspectives to analyse social processes. Students study sociology alongside areas such as cultural anthropology, gender studies, sociology of development, households and family studies, sociology of the environment, social policy and administration, labour studies, and sociology of medicine and health care.

The degree takes four years full time and is offered on a semesterised basis. Students complete a minimum total of thirty courses, including twenty-eight courses plus a project on an approved sociological problem (a project is worth two courses). In the third year, students go to attachment for the whole year. To proceed to the project, students must have passed qualitative and quantitative research methods in the second year.

Mature Entry (25 years and above): A minimum of 5 ‘O’ Level passes including English at grade C or better; and a professional qualification such as a diploma in a related field of study. A minimum of 3-years relevant working experience.

Normal Entry (24 years and below): 5 “O” level passes including English at grade C or better and 2 “A” Level passes in Social Sciences related subjects.
