The Doctor of Arts in Art and Design at the University of Lapland covers ecologically, economically, culturally and socially sustainable design, environmental art, community art, winter art, media art and visual arts. The programme emphasises pluralistic and multicultural art and design in the northern regions. It also develops creative solutions in art and design for the needs of northern services.

The degree combines science and art. Research may include work on design and media, and new methods for community art education. Many dissertations include an artistic section alongside scientific research, such as an exhibition or a product development project.

The doctorate is normally completed in four years. The University of Lapland offers teaching in Finnish and English through contact teaching, online teaching, independent learning and distance teaching.
