About this program

The Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts is a five-and-a-half-year degree programme at the University of the Arts Helsinki. It begins with a course called An introduction to independent artistic work and the subject areas. Students then choose a subject area from sculpture, painting, printmaking, or time and space arts. Time and space arts has three specialisations: moving image, photography, or site and situation specific art.

Artistic work and related theory form the core of the studies. Students also take courses in exhibition studies, art history, art theory, philosophy, and languages. The Academy organises teaching so that students with different linguistic backgrounds can take part in the same courses, and teaching is regularly offered in English.

The programme supports personal supervision and discussion within the Academy. Students learn the skills needed for independent work in visual arts and to understand their roles in contemporary art and society.
