The Doctor of Education at the University of Lapland focuses on educational phenomena, learning and teaching in the context of social change. The faculty says its research has two focuses: learning and teaching as advocates of socially sustainable development, and education, work and equality in Arctic communities. The first focus covers teacherhood, teaching, studying, learning processes, and their planning and development. The second examines the agency of citizens of different generations from the point of view of intersecting differences.
The degree is 240 ECTS credits and is planned to take four years. The studies include doctoral studies of 60 credits and a dissertation of 180 credits. The doctoral studies are organised through the Graduate School, a thematic doctoral programme and/or the student’s own field of research, plus doctoral seminars. Teaching is offered in Finnish and English through contact teaching, online teaching, independent learning and distance teaching.
A doctor’s degree as a major subject in education covers education, adult education and media education. The dissertation may be a monograph or an article dissertation.
