Doctor of Social Sciences, postgraduate degree, University of Lapland

The Doctor of Social Sciences at the University of Lapland is a postgraduate degree in social and behavioural sciences. The Faculty of Social Sciences says its research focuses on Arctic and northern areas. The programme also covers the faculty’s major and minor subjects, including management, international relations, tourism research, social politics, social work, sociology and political science.

The degree is 210 ECTS credits and is planned to take three years. Teaching is in Finnish and English. Study is delivered through distance teaching, independent learning, contact teaching and online teaching. Doctoral candidates may study in the thematic programme The Arctic in a Changing World or in the faculty’s field-specific doctoral programme. They may also take courses offered by the University’s Graduate School.

After a Master’s degree, the student completes studies in line with the postgraduate curriculum and writes a doctoral thesis. The thesis may be a monograph or an article thesis. The thesis may be written in Finnish, Swedish, English or another language approved by the faculty.
