Doctoral Programme in Humanities and Social Sciences

The Doctoral Programme in Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Jyväskylä leads to a Doctor of Philosophy or a Doctor of Social Sciences, depending on the specialisation. The programme includes independent research, an extensive research project, and the writing and public defence of a doctoral dissertation. It develops expertise in analytical thinking, problem-solving, communication and digital skills.

You choose one specialisation at the application stage: History, Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology; Language Studies and Communication Studies; Music, Arts, and Culture Studies; or Social Sciences and Philosophy. The degree also includes other doctoral studies totalling 30 ECTS credits. Teaching is in Finnish and English. The planned duration is four years, and full-time studies take about three to four years.
