Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences

The Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences at Tampere University leads to the Doctor of Philosophy or Doctor of Social Sciences. It covers Criminology and Criminal Policy, Social Anthropology, Social Policy, Social Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Gender Studies, Youth Research and Peace and Conflict Research. The programme develops theoretical and methodological skills, research ethics, good scientific practice and the ability to work independently in research.

Studies are organised around 240 ECTS credits. The programme has three modules: General academic competences, Discipline- and field-specific studies, and Doctoral Dissertation. The dissertation is 200 ECTS credits. Doctoral studies and supervision are intended to last four years, and each student draws up a personal study and supervisory plan.

Tampere University says graduates work in research, education, development, planning and supervisory tasks. The programme also prepares students for academic research and teaching positions in Finland and abroad, and for expert and management tasks in the public and private sectors.
