Doctoral Programme in Drug Research

The Doctoral Programme in Drug Research is a multidisciplinary doctoral programme at the University of Helsinki. It covers the whole life cycle of drug development, from discovering novel drug targets to pharmacovigilance. The programme includes research in brain diseases, fundamental neuroscience, cancer medicine, antibiotic resistance, pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical research, industrial pharmacy, clinical pharmacy, pharmacoepidemiology, toxicology and veterinary drug research.

A doctoral degree consists of a doctoral dissertation and formal studies worth 30 credits. The studies include discipline-specific studies and transferable skills studies, and doctoral researchers also complete research ethics and internationalisation studies. The programme is taught in English and uses contact teaching. Full-time doctoral researchers can complete the degree in about four years, and part-time study is also possible while working in a company or research institute.

The programme trains doctoral researchers in the fields of the whole life cycle of medicines and toxicology. The University of Helsinki says applicants need a relevant previous degree and sufficient studies in a discipline suitable for the proposed dissertation topic.

Applicants must have completed one of the following:

• an applicable second-cycle university degree
• an applicable second-cycle degree from a university of applied sciences
• an applicable education at an institution abroad providing eligibility for equivalent higher education in the country in question

The University of Helsinki says a degree is regarded as relevant if it includes sufficient studies in a discipline that is a suitable basis for doctoral studies given the topic of the proposed doctoral dissertation. Students graduating from master’s programmes in pharmacy, pharmaceutical research, development and safety, neuroscience, translational medicine, microbiology, medicine, veterinary medicine, chemistry, physics, engineering, computing, plant biology or molecular biology are welcome. Applicants admitted to pursue a licentiate degree in medicine and dentistry or veterinary medicine at a Finnish university or at a university from an EU/EEA country, and applicants admitted to pursue a bachelor's and master's degree in psychology and logopaedics at a Finnish university, can also be admitted to pursue a postgraduate research degree. Applicants licensed as healthcare professionals by the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health or as veterinarians by the Finnish Food Authority, who have completed applicable education abroad equivalent to a second-cycle university degree or a second-cycle degree from a university of applied sciences, can also be admitted.
