Doctoral Programme in Literary Studies

The Doctoral Programme in Literary Studies leads to a Doctor of Philosophy. It covers Finnish Literature and Comparative Literature. The programme focuses on the historical continuum of literature, current forms of Finnish and international literature, textuality, poetics, and the intersections of literature, language and philosophy. It also gives strong attention to narrative theory and the analysis of literature, society and culture.

The degree takes 4 years and is taught in Finnish and English. It is delivered as blended teaching. The structure has three parts: general academic competences, discipline- and field-specific studies, and a doctoral dissertation. The dissertation is 200 ECTS and must be defended in public. The other two parts total 40 ECTS. A Licentiate of Philosophy degree is an optional intermediate step.

Tampere University says graduates can conduct independent scientific research and work in the scientific community and society. The programme notes that graduates are appointed to university-level research and teaching posts in Finland and abroad.

The programme welcomes applicants who have earned a Master's degree in literary studies at Tampere University or in another literary discipline at another university. Applicants who have specialised in narrative theory and textuality may apply regardless of their major. In some cases, the programme may require supplementary courses, decided case by case.
